What is Biodiversity Net Gain?

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) aims to ensure that habitat for wildlife is in a better state than it was before development.

BNG is a policy introduced by the Environment Act in 2021 that requires most new developments in England which require planning permission to deliver a minimum 10% increase in biodiversity value to what was found on site prior to development.

This ensures that biodiversity is not negatively impacted by new development.

The required biodiversity increase can be delivered either fully or in part through on-site habitat, off-site habitat, the purchase of BNG units from habitat banks, or as a last resort, the purchase of statutory biodiversity credits.

BNG affects:

  • Developers

  • Landowners

  • Local planning authorities

What does BNG mean for developers and landowners?

While BNG introduces new responsibilities, it also presents opportunities.

For developers, BNG means planning projects and strategies that enhance biodiversity, comply with regulations and avoid delays, whilst meeting development goals.

For landowners, BNG creates opportunities to generate income by restoring, creating, or managing habitats on their land.

Together, it encourages sustainable development while supporting wildlife, ecosystems, and long-term land value.
